The Borg’s final assault begins–Star Trek Destiny: Lost Souls Book Review

Rating: 5/5

I’m back again with the last book in the Star Trek Destiny trilogy titled Lost Souls. This is the one where everything goes nuts. The Borg initially tried their first skirmish and failed. Deanna Troi and the rest of the Away team are left behind due to Riker trying to uphold his duty to the Federation, despite wanting to stay a bit longer to rescue his wife. Former captain of the Columbia and superwoman Erika Hernandez escapes from her Caliear captives after 800 years residing with them throughout human history to join the Federation’s efforts in defeating the Borg. Jean-Luc Picard of the Enterprise and Ezri Dax of Adventine are off to continue in their efforts to defend planets from the Borg menace. Here we are.

Taking place immediately after Mere Mortals, after the Federation attempts to cut off their invasion route, the Borg begins their ultimate blitzkrieg across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Now, it’s a race against time for our heroes in a last-ditch effort to save trillions of lives. To quote Spock, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”.

This book was my personal favorite out of all three books. One, it ties everything from the first book and culminates in an epic apocalyptic showdown. You become uncertain if the Federation will survive or crumble in darkness as seen with scenes of Borg committing total genocide after many attempts of assimilation have failed.

Two, it also gives Hernandez a chance to shine as her part in this trilogy comes to play here and it is really impactful with how things turn out. In addition, we see the origins of the Borg through a flashback narrative in 4527 B.C.E. that perfectly explains everything. Without saying too much, it is a really fun read.

Overall, Star Trek Destiny by David Mack as a whole is perhaps my favorite Star Trek book trilogy so far. Sort of like the MCU, this book series was an event that transformed the universe of Star Trek forever. The next major book written by the same author tops this feat with Section 31: Control which I am really excited to read. I am also in the process of reviewing the Star Trek Prey trilogy with Book 2 coming soon. As of now, I can be considered something that people call Star Trek fans–a “Trekkie” (though the word “fan” is just fine). See you next time!
